Cybersecurity Awareness Month - Explore. Experience. Share.
Cybersecurity
This week is designated as Cybersecurity Career Awareness week as part of the overall Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This week is all about inspiring, promoting awareness, and the exploration of cybersecurity careers.
The possibilities are endless!
When people think about cybersecurity, the image of a cybersecurity analyst working in a security operations center (SOC) is probably the most common position that comes to mind. But the possibilities within the cybersecurity field are quite extensive and depending on your interests, if you are thinking about a career or education in the field, you are likely to find something that will fit you perfectly!
The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) put together a large list of positions under different areas of specialization within cybersecurity. In all, there were 42 different positions listed in seven different categories (Securely Provision, Operate & Maintain, Oversee & Govern, Protect & Defend, Analyze, Collect & Operate, Investigate).
At Tego Cyber Inc., we have a variety of different people working in various positions across many of the different categories from defending our organization, governing our security (or making sure we are doing what we are supposed to be doing and developing our policies!), analyzing information for both the organization as well in combination with collecting & operating to strengthen our products, and of course, our software development team that specializes in building cybersecurity software solutions!
This is what a cybersecurity professional looks like!
We assure you that we are not all hoodie-wearing (except in the wintertime when we swear by our sweatshirts!), anti-social (we love to have fun!) hackers (our team prefers the term security researchers!) Additionally, Tego Cyber Inc. is breaking the mold of the stereotypical cybersecurity professional with our co-founder and CEO, Shannon Wilkinson, a cybersecurity expert who just happens to also be female.
In addition to heading Tego Cyber Inc., Shannon is passionate about promoting diversity and awareness within STEM, particularly cybersecurity. She authored an Amazon best seller titled "Ripping Off the Hoodie: Encouraging the Next Generation of STEM Girls" which talks about the need to close the gender gap to ensure a better future.
The odds are overwhelmingly in your favor!
Looking at the statistics about cybersecurity careers, you'll find that the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor should you choose to pursue a position. There is a significant skills gap, which means there simply are not enough people with the right skills to fill the vacant positions. It's estimated that there are at least 500,000 vacant positions within the United States that will go unfilled, and 3.12 million worldwide.
Below is just a sample of some of the numbers for the demand for qualified cybersecurity professionals from the NICE Workforce Demand flyer.
