Major IoT Trends to Expect in 2023
The Internet of Things, or IoT, is the name given to describe the connected world of devices that are Internet-enabled. The web of things that make up IoT includes a range of items from household items like smartphones and fitness trackers to highly technical medical equipment. Basically, anything that connects to the Internet makes up some of the IoT. In2023, there are many things anticipated for this world - below we’ll dive into three of the top trends expected for this sector in the new year.
Healthcare - The pandemic brought about much change, particularly for the world of medicine, but it also brought about a wider acceptance of meeting with others in virtual ways. This included not only an increase in working from home and conducting meetings online, but it also resulted in many other appointments being shifted to being virtual as well. Be it a therapy session or getting something like a mole checked out by your doctor, there was a shift to virtual doctors appointments where possible. This phenomenon known as telemedicine is expected to continue in 2023 and will be an area that is expected to grow and improve as doctors and patients alike have become more familiar with it.
Healthcare IoT also impacts the doctors working on-site with in-person patients. Many medical devices have been modernized and improved with the addition of Internet connectivity. Devices such as smart monitoring systems for things like glucose or heart rate are getting more and more common so that folks can more easily track their health. As has been the case in recent years, it can be anticipated that continued improvements and innovations in this field will be seen in the new year.
Edge Computing - Edge computing is a distributed computing framework that brings the burden of processing to the (as the name implies) edge of the data sources. The closer proximity to data allows for increased benefits for users as everything is sped up - think of the connection you have to your home Internet network when connected to WiFi versus the connection you have when you plug an ethernet cable into your laptop; that improvement you see when plugged into the Internet directly is one way to try and think of the world of edge computing. In 2023, it is expected that IoT will workhand in hand with edge computing to improve processes for all users. Edge computing allows for real-time processing of information rather than having to have that information sent to the cloud for storage first, only to then be retrieved at a later time after the user sifts through all of the information sitting on the cloud. This is the difference between a simple microphone and one that takes in what the speaker is saying and immediately translates it so that a person speaking a different language can understand them in real time without having to send that information to the cloud first.
Helping with Staff Shortages - A major attraction about the world of IoT devices is that they make our lives easier in many ways. Smart home devices such as smart thermostats and alarm systems provide us with comfort and peace of mind in ways not seen by these devices many years ago. One way that IoT devices are expected to be useful to business owners in particular in 2023 is by helping to assist with increasing staff shortages in many industries. The world of manufacturing, for example, has a workforce that is seeing high rates of retirement without many young folks joining the ranks behind them. This doesn’t mean that manufacturing isn’t still a much needed industry, it just means that there are not the bodies needed to fill the positions necessary for getting the work done. This is where IoT automation can come in and be of assistance.
